THE ZERO-MODE WAVEGUIDE AND PACIFIC BIOSCIENCES' SINGLE MOLECULE, REAL-TIME DNA SEQUENCING: TRANSLATION OF DISCOVERY INTO A PRODUCT

The zero-mode waveguide is a nanophotonic device developed based on initial work at Cornell University to assist in single-molecule fluorescence studies. Today, Pacific Biosciences sells them as part of a DNA sequencing system based on fluorescence-based, real-time observation of DNA polymerases during template-directed DNA synthesis. In this talk, I will tell the story of the translation of this discovery into a commercial product.
