The University of Maryland, the Maryland NanoCenter and the University of Maryland Energy Research Center

The University of Maryland enjoys a culture in which novel cross-disciplinary teams are spontaneously generated to meet important research challenges, without regard for departmental, college, or disciplinary boundaries. Micro and Nano research at the University of Maryland includes strengths in key areas such as scanning nanoprobes, complex oxide and multifunctional materials, focused ion beam research, microscale devices, biomolecular engineering, biomaterials, polymer composites, and ultrafast dynamics.

The Maryland NanoCenter was established as a partnership among the A. James Clark School of Engineering, the College of Computer, Math, and Physical Sciences, and the College of Chemical and Life Sciences, with sustaining support from all three and the campus. The NanoCenter is home to the University of Maryland's Micro and Nano Fabrication Laboratory (FabLab), a class 1000 research cleanroom located in the Jeong H. Kim Engineering Building. The lab supports research and development programs in nano science and technology, micro-electromechanical systems, semiconductors, materials and devices for electronics, bioscience and bioengineering, and sensor/actuator systems.

The University of Maryland Energy Research Center (UMERC) is a multidisciplinary initiative dedicated to advancing the frontiers of energy science and technology, with a special focus on forward-looking approaches for alternative energy generation and storage. The Center focuses on a broad array of research areas critical for future energy technology development.
