On behalf of the Organizing Committee of the 6th International Conference on Microtechnologies in Medicine and Biology, it is a great honor and pleasure to welcome you to the beautiful region of Lucerne, in the Swiss Alps, from May 4 to 6, 2011.

The primary purpose of the conference is to foster interactions between life scientists, physicians, chemists, physicists and engineers to enhance and strengthen the potentials of microtechnologies in revolutionizing the fields of medicine and biological sciences. The past successes of MMB conferences are certainly due to the high scientific level of the presenters, but also to the friendly atmosphere providing unique opportunity both to meet old and to make new friends and colleagues. This year again, the members of the Organizing Committee are working to make this a very successful conference. The flash/poster sessions that are one of the trademarks of the MMB conferences will be again one of the central parts of the program, together with the plenary talks that will be held each day by internationally renowned scientists.

The conference will take place at the Seeburg Hotel, located directly on the shore of the stunning lake of Lucerne, on which we will have the opportunity to enjoy a cruise during the Thursday's banquet! Lucerne unquestionably one of Europe's most charming cities, is ideally situated in the historic and scenic heart of what many believe to be the "true" Switzerland - picture mountains, lakes, cowbells, alpine villages and meadows full of edelweiss. From the perpetual snow on Mt. Titlis to Lucerne's landmark mountain, Mt. Pilatus, and the historic Rütli Meadow, everything is within easy reach. Legend and national pride says that it was on the Rütli Meadow on August 1, 1291, that representatives from the three forest cantons around the lake - Uri, Schwyz and Nidwalden - met amidst continuing Habsburg repression to sign a pact of eternal mutual defense, thereby laying the foundation of the Swiss Confederation as it stands today.

I cordially invite you to join us to reconnect with old friends and to share your discoveries with new colleagues at MMB2011, and I hope that you will take this opportunity to explore the historic curiosities and landscape wonders that lay around the lake of Lucerne. I look forward to meeting you in Switzerland next May!
