COLLABORATIVE EFFORTS IN NEW NANOMANUFACTURING TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENT AND COMMERCIALIZATION - A PERSPECTIVE

Collaborative efforts to develop and commercialize new nano-scale manufacturing technologies are often conflicted. Speed, flexibility and IP concerns make teams shy away from collaboration, while demands for expensive equipment and facilities can be advantageous. This talk will review examples of collaboration in the past, successful and less so, to draw conclusions as to the elements that can draw government, academia and industry to viable collaboration in high technology development and commercialization. Specific collaboration examples that will be discussed include semiconductor mask fabrication and inspection technologies, and commercialization of nanoimprint technology for high volume applications in hard disk drives and CMOS memory.
